Peshitta significa "claro, direto, comum, simples". O texto da peshitta é um antigo texto em aramaico. No tempo de Jesus Cristo, o aramaico era a língua da Palestina, porque os judeus haviam adotado isso no tempo do exílio, deixando o hebraico como uma linguagem de adoração.

O texto Peshitta tem suas origens desde o final do segundo século, embora seu manuscrito mais antigo seja de 534 d.C. Os tradutores preferem não dar sua opinião quanto à grande questão se o Novo Testamento foi escrito principalmente em grego ou aramaico (ver página X).

Peshitta means "clear, straightforward, ordinary, simple". The peshitta text is an ancient Aramaic text. In the time of Jesus Christ, Aramaic was the language of Palestine, because the Jews had adopted it at the time of exile, leaving Hebrew as a language of worship.
